Formed out of serendipity
and a shared love of chamber music by Andreia Torain (violin), Linda Metzler (cello)
and Elise Auerbach (piano), Philalea seeks to bring the unique nature of this
music, with its rich and varied repertoire, to life for audiences of all ages
and backgrounds.
Though their paths had crossed only infrequently in the Philly music scene, the three freelance musicians found themselves preparing for a trio concert in the spring of 2012 and, following that successful endeavor, happily discovered (or, as Andreia put it, “Kismet!”) that each had the time and motivation to continue.
The rehearsal process fascinates Philalea: colors of the musical spectrum are explored and musical layers uncovered; lines emerge and interweave forming the musical whole. The unique interaction between players and the spontaneity of interpretation each performance allows drives the work and utterly captivates the ensemble.
Conveying that these musical ideas are universally meaningful and relevant to modern audiences in a world that increasingly demands more distraction than concentration is a mutual goal of the group. Ultimately, Philalea is the outcome of three lives of musical study shared... and a labor of love.
